"Basic Building Blocks for implementing RFID in Healthcare"

The healthcare industry is unique given its daily responsibility for human life. We often hear that patient outcomes are dependant on three factors: Patient safety, patient satisfaction and efficient delivery of healthcare services. These bold concepts are fortified by rigorous approval guidelines, regulations and mandates often requiring your institution to manually monitor clinical, administrative and resource procedures to earn an accredited status. Without these procedural proof documents, auditing agencies can render an unfavorable option and challenge your institution’s financial and operational viability.

Technology not only enhances operational efficiencies but it can provide unexpected benefits by increasing patient and staff efficiencies. One of these technologies is Radio Frequency Identification (RFID). Today’s hospital environment has several clinically based technologies that use radio and can easily be used for clinical patient safety/ satisfaction programs.

The key operational object of any healthcare institution is to coordinate location, procedure, clinician and patient with verifiably cleaned, maintained and assessable medical device assets. Coordination of these four items into a single location along with seamless operational/ administrative accountability would provide optimum care to your patients.

This course outlines the challenges of synchronizing clinical oriented events with your current operational assets in order to provide the best patient safety practices while employing a modicum of fiscal responsible through existing resource management.

Strategic Insight Objectives for a cross functional team to consider:

  • Who are the departmental Champions I need on my cross functional team to drive the decisions to support, use and purchase new technology systems
  • Understanding the working principles of the technology used
  • How to present solutions to common systemic operational needs and challenges.
  • Apply technology solutions to increase compliance with standards and guideline mandates
  • How to successfully plan, budget and pilot RFID/RTLS as a part of a department or as a support actor role within the next two years
  • How to establish an initial use case around movable asset management-tracking, evolving to the support of patient and staff tracking/workflow improvement.
  • RFID/ RTLS increases workflow, patient safety and the ability to track assets and people through the hospital ecosystem
  • Evaluate your hospitals Wi-Fi and IT infrastructure
  • Address implementation Challenges like Integrating and extending legacy systems
  • Establish a baseline payback on a minimal role out, extrapolate the value (soft and hard ROI) as increasing use of the technology significantly impacts workflow improvement

What will you learn After completing this course, students will be able to:

  • Bird’s-eye view Architect, design, develop, and deploy a pilot
  • Understand RFID/ RTLS systems
    • Physical layer: different types of tags, readers, antennas, printers, and sensors—the way they work and interface with each other.
    • Software layer functionalities—middleware
    • Tie in to enterprise applications - networks
  • Have a list of different vendors, technologies components and applications to evaluate and compare.
  • Understand engineering tools and procedures required for RF site planning
  • How to develop safe electromagnetic Interference operational guidelines
  • Understand existing and emerging healthcare regulations, guidance’s and -Trading partner mandates (premier) where RFID technology can reduce errors , manage resources and increase operational efficiencies.
  • Explore project planning process of RFID system
  • Explore the current and future market trends
  • Interactive demonstration of RFID—connect RFID reader, read tags, store data into a database, and print smart labels

Insights:

  • How does technology impact workflow.
  • What will make a financial decision morph into patient safety requirements- risk management, liability exposure, reimbursement, adverse reporting and infection control?
  • What are the interim steps to yield a clinical/process/asset management workflow product.

Upon successful completion of the course you will receive:

  • Certificate of Attendance
  • Training handbook with extensive coverage of topics discussed in the class.
  • Resources CD with trial software and extensive reference material.
